Always with his camera, Paul has been documenting daily life primarily in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan for over 30 years. From his catalogue of more than 10,000 images, themes have arisen such as Corner Office, Duos, Photographing the Photographers, Color on a Gray Day, and As Seen in Chelsea. A life long Green Activist, Paul shoots every mode of alternative transit he can.
Paul began printing his father’s photographic negatives at age 8, from this time on he was captured by the magic of photography. By the time he joined his after school photographic club he had already put together a basement darkroom with money he set aside from a newspaper delivery route. In high school Paul was given a photographic show, he also shot photographs for his school newspaper.
At New York University he studied Documentary Production, often taking production stills on location shoots. NYU Film school was a life changing experience for Mr. Kornblueh, he was assigned to George Stoney (the program’s founder) as a teaching assistant.
It was at this time that debilitating back pain began to plague him, but he continued to more than carry his weight on shoots, carrying equipment while telling compatriots “The Director needs to be working the hardest.”
With the acquisition of a pocket sized 35mm camera Paul began to carry a camera every chance he could. He was not a quick convert to digital photography however images brought back from a trip overseas so impressed him that he put his 35mm gear aside.
Ultimately, a grateful house guest presented him with an amazing digital camera, the same model he uses for the majority of street shots today. For Paul Kornblueh photographic coverage of his environment is a tonic for urban isolation, connecting him with others, a documentation of the daily life seeking authenticity, balance, and human spirit.
